About Back Pain
Back pain affects 3 million people per year in the United States. It may also present with pain down the leg and may be caused by improper lifting, poor posture, trauma, or normal wear and tear, also known as degenerative disc disease.
Symptoms and Diagnosis of a Herniated Disc
Back and neck pain can be caused by herniation or protrusion of an intervertebral disc into the spinal canal. This can irritate or compress the spinal cord or nerves that go to the arms or legs. This can present with back and/or arm or leg pain, numbness and tingling, or weakness.
The diagnosis of a herniated disc can be made after thorough review of a patient’s medical history and completion of a full clinical examination. Radiologic examination with X-Rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or Computed Tomography (CT) can aid in diagnosis, prognostication, and forming a treatment plan.
